Students complete the course over two years. The course is broken into the following areas:

Component 1 36 GLC: Human Lifespan Development

Learners will investigate how, in real situations, human development is affected by different factors and that people deal differently with life events.

Internally Assessed (30% of the total course)

Component 2 36 GLC: Health and Social Care Services and Values

Learners study and explore practically, health and social care services and how they meet the needs of real service users. They also develop skills in applying care values.

Internally Assessed (30% of the total course)

Component 3 48 GLC: Health and Wellbeing

Learners will study the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and how to design a health and wellbeing improvement plan.

Externally Assessed (40% of the total course)

Written examination 2 hours 60 marks

KS5 Health and Social Care

Qualification: BTEC National Extended Certificate

360 GLH (equivalent in size to one A Level)

Mandatory content = 83%

External assessments = 58%

Students complete the course over two years. The course is broken into the following areas:

Unit 1 (mandatory) 90 GLC: Human Lifespan Development

Learners cover physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan, and the factors affecting development and the effects of ageing.

Written examination 1.5 hrs 90 marks

Unit 5 (mandatory) 90 GLC: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

Learners focus on the principles and practicalities that underpin meeting individuals’ care and support needs, which are the foundation of all the care disciplines.

Internally Assessed

Unit 2 (mandatory) 120 GLC: Working in Health and Social Care

Learners explore what it is like to work in the health and social care sector, including the roles and responsibilities of workers and organisations.

Externally Assessed 1.5 hrs 80 marks

Written examination 90 minutes

Unit 14 (optional) 60 GLC: Physiological Disorders and their Care

Learners explore types of physiological disorders, the procedures for diagnosis, and the development of a treatment plan and provision of support for service users.
