Our GCSE in Business equips students with the skills and confidence to explore how different business situations affect decision-making. They develop their understanding of concepts, objectives and terminology, and the impact of contemporary issues on business operations.

This course equips students with the skills and confidence to explore in a well-rounded introduction to the subject. It will encourage students to make informed choices about a wide range of further learning opportunities and career pathways as well as develop life skills that enable them to become financially and commercially aware.

The course is designed to enable students to:

• Explore business concepts, business terminology, business objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society

 • Understand contemporary business issues and different types and sizes of businesses in local, national and global contexts

• Develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively, to demonstrate business acumen and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions and solve business problems

ASSESSMENT

The specification is divided into topics, each covering key concepts of business.

 The assessment consists of two exams that are both 90 minutes long.

Each one is worth 50% of the total GCSE.

Both question papers have a section with multiple choice questions.

In year 10 students will study Paper Topics 1-3:
• Business activity

• Marketing

  • People

 In year 11 students will study topics 4-7:

• Operations

• Finance

• Influences on business

• The interdependent nature of business

Year 12 & 13

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business.

This is a classroom-based course which gives students the opportunity to apply business theory to vocational situations in preparation for working in Business. Throughout the course we will cover various aspects of individual businesses, such as Marketing and Finance, as well as relating the theory to the everyday world of business. In addition to theory that we cover, it is also our goal to make all of our students prepared for the world of work in the digital economy, which will mean a development of key skills for the business world which all employers will love to see in the future. This is a fantastic course for anyone who has a keen interest in Business and wants to study this alongside A-Level courses at sixth form. The course is equivalent to 1 A Level.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at 4 or above including Maths and English.

Progression

The BTEC qualification is recognised by both Universities as well as employers.

Past BTEC Business students have gone on to study various Business-related courses at University as well as gaining Sponsored Degree Apprenticeships at various local companies in areas including Buying, Finance, Accounting etc.

Course Structure

The full qualification is 4 units.

You will be externally assessed in the following units:

Unit 2 – Developing a Marketing Campaign – Assessment is a supervised assessment in class and will take place in year 12.

Unit 3 – Personal and Business Finance – Assessment is a written examination. This will take place in year 13.

You will be internally assessed in two of the following units:

Unit 1 – Exploring Business- This will take place in year 12

Unit 8 – The Recruitment and Selection Process. This will take place in year 13.
